Processing gender: lived experiences of reproducing and transforming gender norms over the life course of young people in Northern Uganda (Culture, Health & Sexuality Journal, 2018)

July 26, 2018

This article provides a framework to identify the resources, institutions, and processes that shape adolescents’ gendered choices and behaviors. This understanding can be used to inform decisions about when and where to intervene with program and policy levers.

The article results from a qualitative, longitudinal study conducted in tandem with the Gender Roles Equality and Transformation (GREAT) Project implemented by the Institute for Reproductive Health, Pathfinder International and Save the Children, together with local partners Straight Talk and Concerned Parent Association, with funding from USAID.

Older people in displacement: falling through the cracks of emergency responses (ODI/HelpAge International Study, 2018)

July 9, 2018

As part of HelpAge International’s project on advancing the rights and protection of conflict-affected older South Sudanese migrants in Ethiopia, Uganda and South Sudan, HelpAge commissioned the Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) to conduct a study on older South Sudanese displaced by conflict, both within South Sudan and across the border in Uganda and Ethiopia.

This study takes stock of the progress made and remaining challenges faced by those responding to forced displacement, both in addressing the specific needs of older people and harnessing their capacities. The study looks at how the role of older people changes during displacement and their specific vulnerabilities and coping strategies. It also examines how well the humanitarian response to displacement has included older people, and
the role of legal and policy frameworks in ensuring the rights and protection of older people.

Communicating science for impact: radio for reaching farmers with research results (Farm Radio International Brief, 2018)

June 14, 2018

This Farm Radio International (FRI) project aimed to promote large-scale adoption of agricultural innovations and research results from two Cultivate Africa’s Future projects – integrating insects into poultry and fish feed (INSFEED), and quick-cooking bean products – through the use of interactive radio programs.

Key results
• 40 radio community listener groups (CLGs) were formed with over 670 individual members (50% women).
• Before the radio programs were broadcast, all CLGs were trained to record their voices and send the messages to radio stations, using their mobile phones. They were also trained to use radio sets and participate in weekly polls.
• Field monitoring visits were carried out every two months and reports showed that 98% of women and youth respondents valued the programs.
• Looking at data from Uliza, 50,732 listeners participated in radio interactions from December 2015 to June 2017.
• It is estimated that the six project radio stations – Radio Simba, Mega FM, Radio Buddu, Sky FM, Akaboozi FM and Ramogi FM – reached a total of 9 million listeners throughout the project period.

People Centred Advocacy for a more Sustainable Food System (IIED Toolkit, 2018)

May 6, 2018

Fostering civic action and agency to ensure that citizens have voice and choice in relation to the food they eat is vital. However, food systems are complex and many actors help shape and influence them at local, national and international levels. By lobbying from the grassroots up, systemic changes to food systems can be made in order to address local and national challenges. This toolkit aims to provide essential guidance and ideas to advocacy professionals and civil society organisations wishing to mobilise and support low-income citizen groups to advocate for improved diets. It is ideal for civil society organisations that work with those most affected and neglected by food policy, low income consumers, producers, traders, processers and vendors – the people who form the backbone of informal food systems, but whose needs are rarely factored in by policy makers.

Empowering adolescent girls in developing countries: gender justice and norm change (ODI Study, 2018)

March 19, 2018

Adolescence is a pivotal time in a girl’s life. The development of educational, physical, psychosocial, familial, political and economic capabilities enable girls to reach their full potential and contribute to the wellbeing of their families and society. However, progress is still significantly constrained by discriminatory gender norms and the related attitudes and practices which restrict girls’ horizons, restrain their ambition and, if unfettered, allow exploitation and abuse.

This book explores the detrimental impact of discriminatory gender norms on adolescent girls’ lives across very different contexts. Grounded in four years of in-depth research in Ethiopia, Nepal, Uganda and Viet Nam, the book adopts a holistic approach, recognising the inter-related nature of capabilities and the importance of local context. By exploring the theory of gendered norm change, and contextualising and examining socialisation processes, the book identifies the patriarchal vested interests in power, authority and moral privilege, which combine in attempts to restrict and control girls’ lives.
