The Strategic Framework for Malaria Social and Behaviour Change Communication 2018-2030 (RBM Partnership to End Malaria, 2018)
The integration of high quality social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) into malaria strategic plans is essential in order to reach targets to prevent, treat, control, and eventually eliminate the disease. In 2012, the Strategic Framework for Malaria SBCC: 2012-2017 set forth an agenda to advocate for and strengthen technical capacity for SBCC; a number of developments have occurred since its publication to warrant an update and extension of the original framework. Many people in malaria-prone areas now have access to insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and to effective antimalarial drug treatment. Although the number of countries with areas of low transmission has grown, the number of new pharmacological, epidemiological and vector challenges has also increased. Recent global strategy documents, such as the RBM Partnership’s Action and Investment to Defeat Malaria and WHO’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria, call for new approaches and interventions as countries scale up and the dynamics of malaria transmission change. The intended audiences for the Strategic Framework are: • Technical staff at the global, national, and local levels who are responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating malaria control and elimination policies, strategies, and interventions. • RBM SBCC-oriented partners who are engaged in developing, implementing, and evaluating SBCC programmes/projects and who contribute to the global discourse on effective approaches to SBCC ...

Changing gender and social norms, attitudes and behaviours (GSDRC K4D Helpdesk Research Report series 2017)
What rigorous evidence is there on what types of programming interventions work to bring about changes in gender and social norms, and changes in wider attitudes and behaviours? This annotated bibliography presents studies of programmes that aim to bring about changes in gender and social norms, and changes in wider attitudes and behaviours. Much of the literature and some programme designs recognise the need to change social norms in order to change behaviours, such as HIV/AIDs prevention and better sanitation and hygiene. The report looks at interventions targeting the individual and inter-relational levels (e.g. workshops); the community level (e.g. community dialogue, community mobilisation and youth initiatives); and the wider societal level (mass media and edutainment). It highlights the effects of such interventions, focusing on rigorous evaluations. Click here for full report ...
Understanding Social Norms Underpinning Domestic Violence in India (Oxfam India Paper 2016)

It highlights some of the principles that need to be kept in mind while initiating social norm interventions within any context. Gender Socialization during Adolescence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Conceptualization, influences and outcomes (Innocenti Discussion Papers 2017-1)
The rapid changes that take place during adolescence provide opportunities for the development and implementation of policies and programmes, which can influence the gender socialization process, in order to maximize positive outcomes. This paper sets out to provide a conceptual understanding of the gender socialization process during adolescence, its influences and outcomes, and practical suggestions on how to use this knowledge in the design of policies and programmes to improve gender equality. First, theoretical contributions from psychology, sociology and biology were reviewed to situate the gender socialization process during adolescence in a broader context of multi-level influences. Second, a socio-ecological framework was introduced to bring together the main factors that influence the gender socialization process and its outcomes. Third, knowledge on how to influence the gender socialization process and its outcomes was summarized in order to provide practical recommendations for policies and programmes. This included: a) reviewing changes in demographics, the global media and gendered economic opportunities, to understand how the gender socialization process, gender norms and identities have been transformed at the macro level; and b) conducting a literature review of small-scale programmes designed to impact the gender socialization process. The paper concludes with recommendations for more holistic policy ...

Call for Papers: Development in Practice – Special Issue on theme of ‘ Communicating Development / Mediating Social Change’
Guest Editors: Dr. Linje Manyozo (RMIT University) - [email protected]; Prof. Robin Mansell (London School of Economics) Theme: Communicating Development / Mediating Social Change Context: In the aftermath of the 2008 Financial Crash, a group of students at the University of Manchester calling themselves the Post-Crash Economics Society called for a radical rethink of the teaching of economics, specifically, and the social sciences, generally. They argued that alternative theories, practices and reflections are needed to provide an intellectual antidote to mainstream and classical theories and approaches. This includes the theory and practice of development. This special issue of Development in Practice will include papers offering a radical rethink of the theory, practice and pedagogy of communication for development. The aim is to rescue the discourses and approaches from westernization, theoretical elitism, and the ‘developmentalism’ of dominant organizations and institutions. This is in line with celebrating the ‘ethnography of development’ (Mosse 2005; Escobar 1995) and offering pathways for capturing and celebrating subaltern and periphery experiences and theoretical frameworks. Since the 1940s when expansive development interventions were launched the world over in the aftermath of WWII, concerns have been raised by scholars, practitioners and community members about the involvement of local people and ...
