IFIP WG9.4 2019: Strengthening Southern-driven cooperation as a catalyst for ICT4D (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania)

May 1, 2019

About IFIP W.G 9.4

Officially designated as Working Group 9.4 of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) the group has the following aims and scope.

Aims

  1. To collect, exchange and disseminate experiences of developing countries;
  2. To develop a consciousness amongst professionals, policymakers and public on social implications of computers in developing nations;
  3. To develop criteria, methods, and guidelines for design and implementation of culturally adapted information systems;
  4. To create a greater interest in professionals from industrialized countries to focus on issues of special relevance to developing countries through joint activities with other Technical Committees.

About the 2019 Conference:

With the proliferation of ICT related projects to support development, the southern countries are now emerging as important innovators and actors in the global development and adoption of ICT for the community and economic growth. A good example can be seen with how Kenya has been leading the world with mobile payment for several years. The mobile payment (such as Mpesa and Airtel money) has supported micro-financing services and transformed economic activities and lives within the local communities. Such effect offers an exciting setting for reverse innovation whereby lessons learned in ICT4D could offer rich insights for IS research in general. Furthermore, strengthening a southern-driven cooperation promotes ICT initiatives and research carried for, in and by developing countries.

The conference theme of “Strengthening Southern-driven cooperation as a catalyst for ICT4D” seeks to stimulate and encourage critical discussions on the different facets of Southern-driven cooperation, its promises, potential, for creating a better world, and the challenges we face in achieving the promised potential. Grounded by Geoff Walsham’s question, ‘Are we making a better world with technology?’ (Walsham, 2012); the conference will aim at offering context-rich theories, methodologies and practical guidance on the use of ICT’s to empower local communities.

TICTeC 2019

March 19, 2019

Returning for a fifth year, TICTeC 2019 will focus on the impact that civic technology and digital democracy are having upon citizens, decision makers and governments around the world.

Primarily, the goal of TICTeC is to promote and share rigorous and meaningful research into online technologies and digital democracy around the world. The conference facilitates discussion and networking amongst individuals and groups to find real-world solutions through sharing evidence of impact, and (importantly) evidence of what doesn’t work.

In association with the OECD, TICTeC 2019 will bring together individuals from academic and applied backgrounds as well as businesses, public authorities, NGOs, funders and education institutions to discuss ideas, present research and build a network of individuals interested in the civic technology landscape. See who’s previously attended TICTeC.

ICTD X Conference (Ahmedabad, India)

January 4, 2019

The international conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) is organized every 12-18 months, and brings together researchers and practitioners working across domains, sectors, and disciplines to study the role of ICT in social, political, and economic development.

The conference, held in cooperation with ACM SIGCAS, invites participation from a highly diverse and distinguished group of scholarly researchers working in domains such as education, global health, agriculture, gender equality, digital financial services, internet access, and many more. Most of them focus typically on technology design and deployments, human-centered aspects of data science, evaluation of programs implemented by state and national governments, and related areas, all in the realm of global development. This year, we are particularly focused on inviting practitioners who might be interested in connecting with research in their area at the conference.

First organized at the University of California Berkeley, USA, in 2006, the tenth ICTD is scheduled to be held at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, India, from January 4th to 7th, in 2019. In the past, the conference has also been hosted at Information Technology University in Pakistan (2017), University of Michigan in USA (2016), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (2015), University of Cape Town in South Africa (2013), and Georgia Institute of Technology in USA (2012), among others.

At the tenth ICTD, or ICTD X at IIM Ahmedabad, the conference’s focus is on bridging the research-practice gap, and has created a host of opportunities for building and strengthening these bridges. In addition to research presentations by scholars from prominent academic institutions across the world, the conference program will include a slew of variously formatted Open Sessions allowing for dialog and discussions among groups of researchers and practitioners
