mySociety seminar: Parliaments, People and Digital Development (House of Lords, London, UK)

November 21, 2018

On 21st November mySociety will host a seminar at the House of Lords exploring how digital tools are being used in Sub-Saharan Africa to bring parliaments and citizens closer together. During the seminar, they will launch their Parliaments and the People: Digital Democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa report, which presents the findings from an extensive and in-depth research study into digital democracy across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda. This research explores the use of digital channels and platforms in communicating political information in the region, and considers the implications for future development in digital and institution-building.

The report analyses the breadth of digital political engagement in the countries studied, and identifies key structural and cultural considerations that influence whether digital solutions to improving democratic engagement, transparency and accountability in governing institutions will be successful.

The seminar will bring together researchers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss how the insights from this and other work can be integrated into policy, engagement and future development work.

As capacity is limited, attendance to the event is by invitation only. If you’re interested in attending please email  to request an invite.mySociety seminar: Parliaments, People and Digital Development (House of Lords, London, UK)

Gender & Development issue launch: Feminists Doing Digital (London, UK and livestream)

November 15, 2018

The digital revolution is transforming how human beings live, work, and relate to each another. Information and communications technologies (ICTs) have vast potential to communicate, gain access to information and services, and catalyse collective action for social justice. But there is also the risk this revolution will fail to challenge stark inequalities in terms of who benefits and whose voice is heard. And technologies can be used by those who seek to challenge rights as well as realise them.

Join at 5 for a 5.30 start for the launch event of the new issue of Gender & Development which focuses on Information Communication Technologies from the perspective of women’s rights and gender justice.

Introduced by Dr. Caroline Sweetman, editor of Gender & Development, the panel will be chaired by Dr. Awino Okech from the Centre of Gender Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Panelists include Dr. Ronda Zelezny-Green whose article in the journal focuses on the rights on Kenyan girls in the digital age and informal education, Shannon Philip who writes on Youth and ICTs in a ‘new’ India and co-editor Amy O’Donnell who is a specialist on digital technologies at Oxfam and Board member of anti-harassment charity Hollaback!

Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology 2018 (Accra, Ghana/livestream)

October 9, 2018

This event will be live-streamed at: https://livestream.com/internetsociety/aswgt2018

Over 250 of Africa’s leading technology innovators will gather October 9-11 in Accra, Ghana for the second Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology. The Summit — which comes at a crucial point in time when the world is set to reach 50% connectivity — aims to design solutions that will enable millions of African women and girls to benefit from access to technology and use their skills to build a better Africa for all.

Bridging the digital gender gap is a critical step toward the vision of a thriving Africa — yet research has shown that women in some communities are up to 50% less likely than men to be online. In Africa, where nearly 75% of the population remains offline, this problem is particularly acute. The Summit will explore a range of relevant topic areas, with a focus on developing policy to advance:

● Access to affordable broadband
● Women’s rights online
● Digital education and skills
● Digital entrepreneurship

The 2018 Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology is a collaboration between the World Wide Web Foundation, Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), Ghana Ministry of Communications, African Development Bank, Open Society Initiative for West Africa, Internet Society, Facebook, Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (Germany), Google, Swedish International Development Agency and UN Women.
