Children’s Screen Content in an Era of Forced Migration: Facilitating Arab-European Dialogue – Documentaries, Distribution, Ethics (Workshop Briefing, 2018)

June 18, 2018

This workshop briefing, the second in a series of three, is part of a project focused on the representation of refugee and migrant children in European screen content for children. Hosted by the Danish Film Institute (DFI) on 19 and 20 March 2018 as part of the annual Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, CPH:DOX, two half-day workshops offered an opportunity to explore how the topic is handled in children’s content made in Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK and Germany.

In all these countries, screen content that focuses on children newly arrived in Europe is rare. The few examples to touch upon these issues are commissioned and broadcast predominantly by public service broadcasters (PSBs), including Danmarks Radio (DR, Denmark), Nederlands Publieke Omroep (NPO, Netherlands), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC, UK) and Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF, Germany).

The Copenhagen workshops discussed formats that inform children through factual representations rather than fiction.

A glass of glögg at our Denmark-Sweden C4D Network meet-up

December 7, 2015

Fuelled by steaming mugs of glögg, our Denmark-Sweden C4D Network group had a bigger meet-up than ever before this December. The group featured members representing a range of communications and development backgrounds: a number of academics (largely from Ørecomm – Roskilde and Malmø’s CommDev partnership), as well as those from UN agencies, independent consultants, and gender/cross-cultural training. Such variety meant discussions on this sector were animated from a number of angles: how can academics better connect and share ideas between a range of institutions, for example, and how best to work with UN agencies. A number of attendees were involved in projects on overlapping issues and areas, meaning that participatory theatre, gender and East Africa were particular topics for conversation.

The Denmark-Sweden C4D Network group resolved to aim to meet at least 3 times a year – in spring, summer and winter – with the next meet-up (hopefully featuring a film screening in UN City) planned for April 2016. We look forward to seeing this group continue to grow, and to welcoming you along next time!
