C4D Network attend Roundtable with Maimunah Mohd Sharif (Executive Director, UN-Habitat)

May 20, 2018

Jackie Davies, C4D Network, attended the Oxford Urbanists, ThinkCity, and the Oxford Sustainable Urban Development Programme Roundtable event with Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. Held in Oxford, UK earlier this month attendees had the opportunity to give their feedback and share ideas about how the UN can promote inclusive urbanisation.

Oxford Urbanists detailed the event: Ms. Sharif gave an opening speech relating her Malaysian background, growing up in a rural settlement, and coming to the UK for her studies to be a professional planner in her expanding role in local government. She discussed what she hopes to achieve as Executive Director of UN-Habitat, including the role of Oxford in expanding opportunities for wider participation by young people and academia in developing “true value” from urbanisation.

She also shared her nascent attempts to refine the agency’s vision and mission, and gauged from attendees what are the key recommendations that should be taken into consideration with regards to future trends in urbanisation, particularly with regards to social inclusion issues.

MSc Communication for Development, Reading University (UK)

March 18, 2018

Full Time: 12 months | Part Time: 24 months

Start date: September 2018

Developing knowledge and skills to support positive change through communication

Rapid changes in the communication landscape – technologies, communication processes, and communication opportunities – offer new ways to understand and improve livelihoods, poverty reduction, and governance. Understanding how communication can support individual and social change can lead to more effective and dynamic development practice.

Practical applications of communication and development are diverse: they include extension and advisory services, communication and climate change risk reduction, communicating about health challenges, and communication to reduce food insecurity. As issues such as food security, challenging inequalities, supporting the role of agriculture, and addressing climate change challenges are of increasing important on the global development agenda, so too is the role of communication in facilitating, driving, and enabling change.

This master’s programme:

  • builds a critical understanding of innovation and communication theory in the diverse contexts of international and local development.
  • strengthens professional competence in the design, planning and management of information and knowledge interventions.
  • provides a focus on practical application of new knowledge and skills to support innovation and change.

DFID launch their ‘Digital Strategy 2018 to 2020: doing development in a digital world’

March 3, 2018

DFID’s recently launched Digital Strategy 2018-2020 sets out a vision and approach for doing development in a digital world. Its aim is to establish DFID as a global leader in digital technology and development, in order to have a bigger, faster and more cost-effective impact on the lives of poor people.

Digital technologies have the potential to revolutionise the lives of the poor, unlock development and prosperity, and accelerate progress towards the Global Goals. The rapid expansion of mobile phones and internet access in poor countries offers unique opportunities to:

  • Stimulate growth, jobs and financial inclusion.
  • Cut fraud and empower citizens to hold governments and other institutions to account.
  • Provide better response in humanitarian emergencies.
  • Improve learning outcomes for children in some of the poorest countries.
  • Increase inclusion by providing access to services previously out of reach to marginalised groups such as girls. and women, and people with disabilities.
  • Enhance traceability and transparency of aid funding throughout the delivery chain.
  • Deliver real-time feedback and direct engagement with our beneficiaries and the UK public.
