‘The Pulse: A Guide to Health Communication’ – BBC Media Action online training

The Pulse is a free, online course for people interested in using media to inspire people to lead healthier lives. The course is aimed particularly at people who are new to health communication.

Through a series of activities and films, you will learn practical tools about making health communication interventions that work. This will give you the skills to design and produce content that captures large audiences’ attention and encourages them to act. The course includes examples of successful health communication campaigns to inspire you, as well as fact sheets on key health topics such as HIV and AIDS, family planning, nutrition, child health and sanitation.

The course features an exclusive film with academic experts – Dr Val Curtis from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Dr Robert Hornik from the Annenberg School for Communication – talking about the elements and processes that go into making successful health communication interventions.

The Pulse course is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development.

La recherche montre que la communication interactive basée sur la théorie qui suit un processus prouvé de conception et de mise en œuvre peut augmenter les connaissances, changer les attitudes et les normes, et produire des changements dans un vaste éventail de comportements.

Ce cours vise à accroître la compréhension de l’apprenant des principes fondamentaux de la communication en matière de santé. Il inclut également des conseils pour gérer les projets de communication en matière de santé, une orientation sur la manière de déterminer la qualité des interventions et les documents, et des liens aux preuves de l’efficacité des programmes de communication en matière de santé.

‘Health Communication for Managers’ – Global Health eLearning Center’s online training session

Effective health communication interventions are an essential component of public health programming.

Research shows that theory-driven, interactive communication that follows a proven process for design and implementation can increase knowledge, shift attitudes and norms, and produce changes in a wide range of behaviors.

This course aims to increase the learner’s understanding of the basic principles of health communication. It also includes tips for managing health communication projects, guidance on how to determine quality of interventions and materials, and links to evidence of the effectiveness of health communication programs.

‘Lifeline Programming’ for journalists reporting during a humanitarian crisis – BBC Media Action online course

This free, online ‘Lifeline Programming’ course shows journalists and editors how media can best help their listeners and viewers during a humanitarian crisis.

The 45 minute course – narrated by Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent – includes interactive modules on ‘communicating during crises’, ‘connecting with audiences’ and ‘working with the humanitarian sector’.

The aim of Lifeline Programming is to alleviate people’s suffering and assist with their recovery. It provides timely, relevant and practical information on subjects ranging from food water and shelter to medical care and psychological support.

Affected people are also given the opportunity to voice their concerns, express their needs, share their stories and solutions and hold humanitarian aid providers to account.
