TICTeC 2020

March 24, 2020

Returning for the sixth year, TICTeC 2020 will focus on the impact that civic technology and digital democracy are having upon citizens, decision-makers and governments around the world.

Primarily, the goal of TICTeC is to promote and share rigorous and meaningful research into online civic technologies and digital democracy around the world. The conference facilitates discussion and networking amongst individuals and groups to find real-world solutions through sharing evidence of impact, and (importantly) evidence of what doesn’t work.

TICTeC 2020 will bring together individuals from academic and applied backgrounds as well as businesses, public authorities, NGOs, funders and education institutions to discuss ideas, present research and build a network of individuals interested in the civic technology landscape.

C4D Network at the CEC18 Civic Education Conference (Morocco, 3-7 December 2018)

December 6, 2018

The C4D Network is pleased to be part of the CEC18 Civic Education Conference, being held in Morocco from 3 – 7 December. This event is exploring how ‘civic education’ is understood and is being innovated across the MENA region as well as internationally.

‘Civic education’ and ‘C4D’ have not been linked to any significant degree to date, but in reality there is a close alignment, as highlighted in the CIVICUS definition below:

“Civic education can be broadly defined as the provision of information and learning experiences to equip and empower citizens to participate in democratic processes… Civic education is an approach that employs a range of different methods, and is frequently used in conjunction with other capacity-building and dialogue approaches to strengthen the ability of citizens and civil society groups to organize themselves, interact with others and make their voices heard by those in power.”[1]

The organisers of the conference are NACE (Networking Arab Civic Education), and further resources and insights about this field – including a database of countries and strategies – can be found on their website www.nacecommunity.org.

The New Global Citizen: Harnessing Youth Leadership to Reshape Civil Society (Rhize report 2016)

October 9, 2016

This report explores how the global development sector has not kept pace with the changing ways youth seek to create social change, creating a disconnect between formal civil society and the majority of youth leaders.

Without understanding this new model of global citizenship—what the report calls “participatory citizenship,” Rhize argues that international development institutions will continue to miss the innovative, networked energy of youth leaders who are motivated, and activated but who need better support to achieve collective global impact. This report analyzes these gaps, opportunities and outlines a path forward through a new “Collective Civic Participation Framework”.
