TICTeC 2020

March 24, 2020

Returning for the sixth year, TICTeC 2020 will focus on the impact that civic technology and digital democracy are having upon citizens, decision-makers and governments around the world.

Primarily, the goal of TICTeC is to promote and share rigorous and meaningful research into online civic technologies and digital democracy around the world. The conference facilitates discussion and networking amongst individuals and groups to find real-world solutions through sharing evidence of impact, and (importantly) evidence of what doesn’t work.

TICTeC 2020 will bring together individuals from academic and applied backgrounds as well as businesses, public authorities, NGOs, funders and education institutions to discuss ideas, present research and build a network of individuals interested in the civic technology landscape.

Technology for learning in Nakivale Refugee Camp

September 12, 2019

SPIDER is an independent centre focusing on the digitalisation of international development. It brings together actors in development to promote human centered technology for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By combining practical work and applied research, SPIDER contributes to empirical knowledge on ICT for Development (ICT4D).

Since November 2017, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) with funding from Spider has been implementing an e-learning project that incorporates use of information and communication technology (ICT) into the teaching and learning of mathematics and basic health education in Nakivale refugee camp.

Both teachers and students perceived the platform to be useful in terms of improving performance by enabling access to learning materials they wouldn’t otherwise have access to, especially multimedia tutorials in video and audio formats.

Currently the e-learning platform is in use after introductory teacher trainings. The challenges that remain untackled include the lack of pedagogy skills for teachers, limited access to internet, modern library and sufficient computer resources, the overwhelming number of learners in classrooms, and students’ negative attitudes about mathematics and science. The project support and efforts towards overcoming the highlighted challenges is ongoing. An evaluation study will present the findings of the project interventions.

Media & Communication: The State of the Art Conference (Leicester, UK)

June 27, 2019

The central aim of this conference is to explore the extent to which existing theories of media and communication are adequate for the analysis of our contemporary media landscape.

The conference is underpinned by a concern with what we see in the classroom; changes in technology and society; and the role of theory. Centrally, we ask do new technologies require new theories? And if so, where are new theoretical interventions required? We are keen to reflect on the problematization of an increasingly automated environment, where algorithms collect data about us, and make choices about what we consume. What does this automation mean for notions of autonomy and agency; or for the structuring of identity? Do these technologies challenge or embed existing power structures, particularly in areas around gender, race and class? A further aim of this conference is also to reflect on where media studies is, and where it is going: how does media studies remain ‘relevant’ and ‘state of the art’ in light of a rapidly changing media landscape?

The driving questions of this conference are:

1. Do we need new theories of media to address social and technological change?

2. What are the key pedagogical issues in teaching contemporary students of media and communications?

Conference fee: £50. The conference fee is only charged to cover the cost of lunch, teas and coffees, conference dinner and to provide taxis home for any woman who would like one after the evening event.

Postgraduate Students: Free
