mySociety seminar: Parliaments, People and Digital Development (House of Lords, London, UK)

On 21st November mySociety will host a seminar at the House of Lords exploring how digital tools are being used in Sub-Saharan Africa to bring parliaments and citizens closer together. During the seminar, they will launch their Parliaments and the People: Digital Democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa report, which presents the findings from an extensive and in-depth research study into digital democracy across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda. This research explores the use of digital channels and platforms in communicating political information in the region, and considers the implications for future development in digital and institution-building.

The report analyses the breadth of digital political engagement in the countries studied, and identifies key structural and cultural considerations that influence whether digital solutions to improving democratic engagement, transparency and accountability in governing institutions will be successful.

The seminar will bring together researchers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss how the insights from this and other work can be integrated into policy, engagement and future development work.

IAMCR 2018: Reimagining Sustainability: Communication and Media Research in a Changing World (Oregon, United States)

IAMCR conferences address a wide diversity of topics defined by our 31 thematic sections and working groups. We also propose a single central theme to be explored throughout the conference with the aim of generating and exploring multiple perspectives on a shared set of issues. This is accomplished through plenary and special sessions, and in the meetings of the sections and working groups. For IAMCR 2018, the central theme is Reimagining Sustainability: Communication and Media Research in a Changing World.

Transparencia y Anti-Corrupción: Introducción al estudio de la corrupción desde una perspectiva de ética pública y de derecho internacional – Udemy curso en línea corta

Este curso busca introducir a los alumnos al estudio de la lucha contra la corrupción y por la transparencia, desde una perspectiva de ética pública ciudadana y de derecho internacional, incluyendo el estudio de la situación en algunos países de Latinoamérica.

Este curso también está disponible en inglés, árabe y chino, búscalo como Transparency and Anti-Corruption, الشفافية ومكافحة الفساد o 透明和反腐 respectivamente.

El curso se compone de seis unidades. En la primera se entregan algunas nociones conceptuales básicas, con énfasis en la idea de ciudadanía. En la segunda unidad se tratan las normas de ética pública y de derecho internacional que rigen la lucha contra la corrupción y por la transparencia. En la tercera unidad se relaciona la corrupción con algunas áreas específicas, tales como su estudio académico, su presencia en algunas industrias y en la actividad política.

La cuarta unidad presenta algunas organizaciones internacionales y chilenas creadas para la lucha contra la corrupción desde el Estado y la sociedad civil. La quinta unidad trata las principales medidas de prevención, control y sanción de la corrupción. Por último, en la sexta unidad se estudia la situación de corrupción en algunos países de América latina, incluyendo Argentina, Brasil, México, Perú y Venezuela.

El curso consta de 32 clases, cada una de unos 10 minutos, además de un quiz o examen luego de cada clase para reforzar contenidos. Estimamos que para realizar el curso completo (ver todas las clases y responder todos los quizzes) se le debe dedicar aproximadamente 7 horas en total. El curso está hablado en español, con subtítulos, transcripciones, cuestionarios y material adicional en español. No hay límite de tiempo para completarlo.

Transparency and Anti-Corruption: Introduction to the study of corruption from a public ethics and legal perspective – Udemy short online course

This course aims to introduce students to the study of the fight against corruption and for transparency, from a citizen public ethics perspective as well as from a legal standpoint, including the study of the situation in some countries of Latin America.

This course is also available in Spanish, Arabic and Chinese, search for Transparencia y Anti-Corrupción, الشفافية ومكافحة الفساد or 透明和反腐 respectively.

The course comprises six units. In the first one some basic notions are reviewed, emphasizing the idea of citizenship. In the second unit we will study the norms of public ethics and of international law governing the fight against corruption and for transparency. In the third unit corruption will be related to some specific fields, such as its academic study, its presence in some industries and in the political activity.

The fourth unit depicts some international and Chilean organizations created to fight corruption from the State and civil society. The fifth unit deals with the main preventive, control and punitive measures against corruption. Finally, in the sixth unit the situation of some Latin American countries will be reviewed, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
