Stories + Data = Change: The Evidence on Storytelling for Global Health (Washington D.C, USA)

May 15, 2018

Personal storytelling motivates and inspires us, but it can also be a compelling tool within professional communities, used to strengthen networks and improve collaboration. In the context of global health, stories help us interpret essential data, assigning people and faces to the numbers. But how do we balance stories and data, two powerful tools, and even combine them to strengthen programs and foster collaboration among practitioners?

This half-day event, organised by Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project and FP2020, will feature storytellers and those who study the impact of storytelling. Attendees will learn about the Family Planning Voices initiative, which has created a vibrant community of family planning professionals who learn from each other by sharing their own stories. Speakers will cover such topics as the effect of stories on our brains, evidence-based methods to measure the impact of storytelling, and storytelling as a tool to improve critical knowledge sharing.

This event is geared for professionals working in all levels and areas of global health and development.

Being a Man in Nigeria: Perceptions and Realities (Voices 4 Change – Nigeria Research Report, 2015)

September 16, 2016

Understanding men’s attitudes and practices to family, community life and relationships is crucial to improving and encouraging more equitable relationships between men and women. This research report  is a synthesis of a total of five studies – four qualitative and one quantitative – exploring how the culture of masculinity shapes how men see themselves, behave and its impacts on their health/wellbeing as well as on their interpersonal and social relationship with women, girls and the society. The studies were conducted in selected states across the six geographical regions of Nigeria

Key findings:

*Traditional gender attitude and behaviour may be changing in Nigeria as evidence by responses garnered during the studies

*At the broadest level, widely held ideas about masculinity and femininity are powerful “root causes” of gender inequality and violence against women in all its forms.

*Rigid gender stereotypes of men and women create individual tensions, which find expression through negative social voices and interpersonal conflict and violence.

*Gender equitable and non-violent masculinities can bring important benefits to men and women alike, for example; better relationships, less stress, happier children, and future generations who reject violence against women and children in all forms.

*Positive, non-violent role models and education for men and boys (as well as women and girls) help ensure better gender equitable attitudes and behaviours. If these behaviours are inculcated in childhood and young adulthood, they last into adult life with family and possibly community-wide benefits.

Mobile for Development: Transforming Global Healthcare Through Mobile Technology (AIDF report 2015)

November 15, 2015

With the ascent of mobile technology and increased connectivity across the globe, the digital divide is slowly closing. As technological changes and solution-based innovations forge ahead in the next few years, the mobile landscape will be transformed. In the current climate, concerns are focused on unsustainable consumer businesses around mHealth and a highly regulated healthcare market that may restrict the use of mobile devices for healthcare purposes.

This Aid & International Development Forum (AIDF) Mobile for Development report attempts to address these challenges, together with recommendations and next steps to take the mHealth into the next innovation stage. This first report highlights the global scale of mHealth adoption, latest trends, economic impact and the increasing preference for remote monitoring with patients.
