UNDRR: Engaging children and youth in disaster risk reduction and resilience building
UNDRR has created a guide entitled “Words into Action Guidelines: Engaging children and youth in disaster risk reduction and resilience building”, that addresses how to support and engage children and youth around the world in disaster risk reduction to fully implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

Effect of Two Complementary Mass-Scale Media Interventions on Handwashing with Soap among Mothers
Poor handwashing behavior is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. We evaluated two complementary mass-scale media interventions targeting mothers to increase the frequency of handwashing with soap; one using TV advertising, and the other mobile phone messaging.
For TVCs, there were higher rates of handwashing with soap at key occasions in the first (RR: 1.33, p = .002) and second (RR: 1.26, p = .041) of three treatment arms, or 0.4 additional handwashes with soap on key occasions daily. In the mobile study, new mothers (adj-RR: 1.04, p = .035) and general mothers (RR: 1.07, p = .007) receiving the intervention were more likely to wash their hands with soap on key occasions than those in the control group, corresponding to 1.3 and 1.0 more occasions daily. These interventions were associated with significantly greater handwashing with soap, consistent with the hypothesis that branded mass communications can impact habitual lifestyle behaviors relevant to public health.

C4D in Humanitarian Action
Given the increase in humanitarian and emergency situations related to disease outbreaks and public health emergencies, natural disasters, and refugee situations and violent conflict, UNICEF’s Communication for Development (C4D) Section is increasing efforts to synthesize and learn from these experiences. This allows the team to regularly inform technical support to national and local partners, facilitate cross-regional learning and strengthen its approach to humanitarian action and emergency response.

C4D: An Evaluation of UNICEF’S Capacity and Action- Ethiopia Case Study
The purpose of the global evaluation of UNICEF’s capacity and action in C4D is to generate credible and useful evidence on the requirements for successful implementation of C4D in order to strengthen UNICEF’s future action and results in this area. The Ethiopia report is one of five case studies. Each country case study has four main objectives: 1. To assess the relevance, effectiveness and efficiency of the CO’s efforts to (a) develop the individual knowledge and competences of staff in C4D and (b) enhancing the CO’s overall capacity. 2. To assess the extent to which, and how appropriately, C4D has been integrated into the CO structures and programmes; 3. To assess how relevant C4D related planning and implementation has been (including through use of proposed benchmarks) to the contextual needs of the country programme; and identify factors driving or constraining the relevance of C4D-related planning and programming. 4. To review C4D related performance monitoring and, knowledge management and assess the evaluability of results (outcomes and impact) achieved through programmes using C4D interventions.
