ICTD X Conference (Ahmedabad, India)

January 4, 2019

The international conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) is organized every 12-18 months, and brings together researchers and practitioners working across domains, sectors, and disciplines to study the role of ICT in social, political, and economic development.

The conference, held in cooperation with ACM SIGCAS, invites participation from a highly diverse and distinguished group of scholarly researchers working in domains such as education, global health, agriculture, gender equality, digital financial services, internet access, and many more. Most of them focus typically on technology design and deployments, human-centered aspects of data science, evaluation of programs implemented by state and national governments, and related areas, all in the realm of global development. This year, we are particularly focused on inviting practitioners who might be interested in connecting with research in their area at the conference.

First organized at the University of California Berkeley, USA, in 2006, the tenth ICTD is scheduled to be held at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, India, from January 4th to 7th, in 2019. In the past, the conference has also been hosted at Information Technology University in Pakistan (2017), University of Michigan in USA (2016), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (2015), University of Cape Town in South Africa (2013), and Georgia Institute of Technology in USA (2012), among others.

At the tenth ICTD, or ICTD X at IIM Ahmedabad, the conference’s focus is on bridging the research-practice gap, and has created a host of opportunities for building and strengthening these bridges. In addition to research presentations by scholars from prominent academic institutions across the world, the conference program will include a slew of variously formatted Open Sessions allowing for dialog and discussions among groups of researchers and practitioners

ALIGN webinar: cross-country perspectives on gender norms

July 20, 2018

The Advancing Learning and Innovation on Gender Norms (ALIGN) project, led by ODI and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a new initiative connecting those working on social and gender norms across a range of sectors and issues. Its aim is to further knowledge sharing and innovation to ensure evidence and learning on norm change informs more effective policy and practice.

This webinar introduces the ALIGN platform and discusses some of the key debates and concepts shaping cutting-edge development work on addressing harmful gender norms. Drawing from ODI’s research on gender norms alongside the experiences of projects in Uganda and India, the panel discusses: What are the key concepts and evidence for understanding gender norm change? How can programmes better respond to emerging evidence and context-specific dimensions of gender norms? What challenges, opportunities and learnings can be drawn from projects in Uganda and India to inform policy and practice?

Building Trust in Immunization: Partnering with Religious Leaders and Groups (UNICEF 2004)

October 28, 2015

The guidelines presented in this workbook were created for communication and programme officers and their immunization partners seeking to develop and maintain strong working relationships with religious leaders and groups. They also suggest what actions might be taken when a religious leader or group organizes resistance to immunization. While the guidelines provide an overall framework, they do not offer specific health messages based on religious texts.

The guidelines also suggest ways to reinforce a group’s own organizational structure so that leaders and their followers stay actively engaged in supporting immunization and other health programmes. Three case studies illustrate how alliances were built in Sierra Leone, Angola and India to overcome resistance against routine immunization and polio eradication. The studies are intended to illustrate processes that have worked, rather than models to follow when working with religious groups.
