The Mobile Gender Gap Report 2019 (GSMA, 2019)

February 27, 2019

This report reveals how the mobile gender gap is changing in low- and middle-income countries, as well as ranking the factors preventing equal mobile ownership and mobile internet use for men and women, and outlining the commercial and economic opportunity that closing the mobile gender gap represents.

Findings from this report are based on the results of over 20,000 face-to-face surveys commissioned by GSMA Intelligence across 18 low- and middle-income countries, and subsequent modelling and analysis of this survey data.

New 2018 Global Digital Reports from We Are Social and Hootsuite

February 12, 2018

The new 2018 Global Digital suite of reports from We Are Social and Hootsuite reveals that there are now more than 4 billion people around the world using the internet. Well over half of the world’s population is now online, with the latest data showing that nearly a quarter of a billion new users came online for the first time in 2017. Africa has seen the fastest growth rates, with the number of internet users across the continent increasing by more than 20 percent year-on-year.

Much of this year’s growth in internet users has been driven by more affordable smartphones and mobile data plans. More than 200 million people got their first mobile device in 2017, and two-thirds of the world’s 7.6 billion inhabitants now have a mobile phone.

Social media use continues to grow rapidly too, and the number of people using the top platform in each country has increased by almost 1 million new users every day during the past 12 months.

More than 3 billion people around the world now use social media each month, with 9 in 10 of those users accessing their chosen platforms via mobile devices.

Here are the essential headlines for digital in 2018:

  • The number of internet users in 2018 is 4.021 billion, up 7 percent year-on-year
  • The number of social media users in 2018 is 3.196 billion, up 13 percent year-on-year
  • The number of mobile phone users in 2018 is 5.135 billion, up 4 percent year-on-year

Online Guardian documentary: Quipu Project – social justice phone line in Peru (2017)

May 2, 2017

The Quipu Project is an interactive documentary about women and men who were sterilised in Peru in the mid-1990s.  Many did not give full consent for it to happen.Since 2000, organised groups of sterilised women and men have campaigned for the sterilisations to be acknowledged and compensated.  The campaigners are hindered by several crucial factors.  The majority of them live in remote regions with no internet access, many have not completed primary schooling and only speak the local language, Quechua, rather than the Spanish spoken by most legislators. Twenty years later, they are still seeking justice.Through an interplay between a low-tech telephone line and a high-tech digital interface, the Quipu Project enables communities that are politically, geographically and digitally marginalised to tell their stories around the world using the internet. Contributors can also use the phone line to listen and respond to each other, providing an infrastructure of support that can operate across a dispersed community.  Furthermore, by archiving the collaborators’ testimonies publicly online, it ensures that their oral accounts are not lost.Click here for full details.

Evaluating the Cost-effectiveness of a Mobile Decision Support Tool in Malawi (Health Finance and Governance Project case study and evaluation 2015)

May 1, 2016

Mobile applications are promising tools for strengthening service quality and have been an area of considerable mHealth innovation. Despite growing demand for data to guide policymakers, donors, and program managers in making sound investments, there is a paucity of evidence on the cost-effectiveness of mHealth technologies. To address this gap, the HFG Project analyzed a mobile decision support tool with the following objectives: First, it aimed to provide a transparent and detailed methodology for categorizing the costs of building, deploying, and scaling-up mobile decision support tools in Malawi. Second, it evaluated the incremental cost-effectiveness of a mobile tool’s use in improving clinical care. Finally, the evaluation addressed challenges faced in conducting cost-effectiveness analyses of mHealth interventions when they are scaled up and become multifunctional.
