Improving Development Outcomes Through Social and Behavior Change Communication: Applying a Governance Lens

November 7, 2019

This a summary of an analytical study that can be found on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) website at this URL. Governmental engagement with citizens on issues that affect their daily lives can be critical for addressing development challenges across sectors. Yet distrust of government and/or the international community and their motives can hamper development efforts. The field of social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) holds lessons for actors seeking to address these challenges. By presenting many of the frequently-used practices from the SBCC field, this study aims to inform and strengthen USAID’s work in Africa across sectors such as health, food security, conflict, economic growth, education, and the environment.

Why Invest in ICTs for agriculture? (CTA Discussion Paper, 2018)

March 9, 2019

With the ability to reach many farmers with timely and accessible content, the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for agriculture (ICT4Ag) has the potential to transform farming and food production, worldwide. ICT4Ag supports new methods in the monitoring and management of soils, plants and livestock (precision agriculture), access to online markets, and improved communication between value chain stakeholders, among others. The services provided are vital in connecting farmers with the information they need to improve their agricultural productivity and reduce poverty. Through case studies and examples of ICT4Ag initiatives from across Asia, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa, the first chapter looks at how ICT4Ag actually works to drive economic development across developing economies.

The Mobile Gender Gap Report 2019 (GSMA, 2019)

February 27, 2019

This report reveals how the mobile gender gap is changing in low- and middle-income countries, as well as ranking the factors preventing equal mobile ownership and mobile internet use for men and women, and outlining the commercial and economic opportunity that closing the mobile gender gap represents.

Findings from this report are based on the results of over 20,000 face-to-face surveys commissioned by GSMA Intelligence across 18 low- and middle-income countries, and subsequent modelling and analysis of this survey data.

Blood, Sweat and Tears: Community Redress Strategies and their Effectiveness in Mitigating the Impacts of Extractives and Related Infrastructure Projects in South Africa: 2008-2018 (Natural Justice, 2019)

February 20, 2019

“Blood, Sweat and Tears” was developed based on research conducted on communities’ responses to mining and the extractive industries in South Africa. The report tracks strategies used by communities (and their civil society partners and others) to challenge components of these developments and operations and mitigate the impacts that the communities experience – impacts that range from water contamination, erosion and dust, to displacements and disrupted livelihoods.

The research finds that although litigation was the preferred strategy in the past, communities are increasingly mobilising around other strategies, including social audits, petitions, compliance monitoring, community trainings, public campaigns etc.

Innovation in the Horn, East and Central Africa (HECA): Perspectives from on-the-ground experiences (Oxfam Case Study, 2017)

February 6, 2019

Innovation involves applying information, imagination and initiative to get greater or different value from resources, and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful processes or products.

These case studies showcase some of the innovative ideas that are being implemented by Oxfam in six countries: Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi.  Each project was selected for its potential to bring greater impact in the future. They include turning ‘excrement into income’ in urban slums in Kenya; giving citizens a voice through empowering them to use their mobile phones to report and share information on justice issues in Rwanda; and using a logistical ‘hub’ in Uganda to enhance service delivery and cost-effectiveness across a region.
