Local perspectives on Climate Change, Participatory Video in Somotillo, Nicaragua (CCAFS Working Paper no.100, 2015)

March 6, 2019

Participatory Video is a methodology premised on particular attitudes and behaviors that value collective and consensual decision-making and equalized power relations, seeking local solutions to local problems, through coming together, reflecting, communicating, and taking positive action.

The PV project was conducted following the successful implementation of the Quesungual Agroforestry System in the community of La Danta in the municipality of Somotillo (department of Chinandega, Nicaragua). The objectives of this PV project were to 1. increase participants’ awareness of ways they can influence and mitigate the effects of climate change they’re subject to; 2. empower local groups to take part in a process of analysis and response that celebrates indigenous knowledge and practice; 3. generate a better understanding of gender differences as they relate to climate change adaptation and mitigation; 4. generate knowledge and information that allows future projects in the region to better understand the local context when creating inclusive climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies that have a higher potential for success.

Gendered voices for climate action, a theory of change for the meaningful inclusion of local experiences in decision-making (IIED Working Paper, 2018)

November 12, 2018

Bringing the perspectives of local women and men who have experienced climate impacts into relevant policy arenas is seen as key to just decision-making and meeting the Paris Agreement commitment to a country-driven gender-responsive approach. But there is a lack of robust evidence on how these experiences can increase the ambition, urgency and quality of climate responses at different levels. This paper reviews existing evidence and proposes a theory of change for how the systematic inclusion of women and men with lived experiences of climate change could strengthen climate action.

Public Understandings of Climate Change in Eastern Africa (Nairobi, Kenya)

November 3, 2018

This workshop explores common misconceptions between scientific, institutional and public understandings of climate change and examines how more effective methods of communication and behaviour change may be developed. It focuses on sharing knowledge and approaches across the sciences, and on breaking down differences of understanding.

The workshop will focus on three-panel discussions with leading UCL, UK and East African figures. Panellists will present short “think pieces” designed to stimulate debate with the audience.

Attendance is open to all on a first-come-first-served basis.
